  3. The Extra Ocular Muscles • Located inside the bony orbit. • Responsible for • Moving the eye from one position to another. • Holding the eye in place. • Protecting the eye.

  4. Extraoccular Muscles

  5. Pairs of Extra Ocular Muscles • The Extra Ocular muscles work in pairs. • Superior and inferior recti • Lateral and medial recti • Superior and inferior obliques

  6. Superior Recti • Attached to the eye at 12 o’clock • Move the eye up. Superior rectus is numbered 1 in this picture

  7. Inferior Rectus • Attached to the eyeball at 6 o’clock • Moves the eye down. The inferior rectus is numbered 11 on the diagram at left.

  8. Lateral Rectus • Lateral Rectus • Also called the external rectus • Attached at either 3 or 9 o’clock • Moves the eye toward the outside of the head (toward the temple)

  9. Right Eye

  10. Medial Rectus • Medial Rectus • Also called the internal rectus • Attached at 3 or 9 o’clock • Moves the eye toward the middle of the head (toward the nose)

  11. Superior Oblique • Located high on the temporal side of the eye. • Passes under the Superior Rectus. • Moves the eye in a diagonal pattern -- down and in.

  12. Inferior Obliques • Located high on the temporal side of the eye. • Passes under the Superior Rectus. • Moves the eye in a diagonal pattern -- down and in.
