The Green Cabin at Robbins Park By: Jenny Carminati, Michelle Billy and Jared Schmuckler
Power Supplier: Tidal Power Plant • What it is: Hydropower that converts the energy of tides into forms of power (i.e. electricity) • Hydropower: power from the force or energy of falling water • More predictable then wind and solar energy • Future of electricity use • By 2015, 30 tidal turbines will be installed in the U.S., specifically New York City
Our Design Elements • Shipping Container Architecture • Rain Barrels • Flat Roof • Green Roof • Composting Toilets • Sustainable flooring • LED light bulbs
Shipping Container Architecture • What it is: architecture using steel intermodal containers because of their strength, space and low cost. • Designed to carry heavy materials • Resistance against harsh weather • Easy transportation and planning • Price of a used container: $1,200 • Very little labor • Extreme temps. • Solvents • Must be cleaned before use
Rain Barrels • What it is: tank used to collect and store rainwater from rooftops and gutters • This water would usually end up in streams or to runoff • Pest-free • Rain barrels will save up to 1,300 gal. just during the summer • Lawn and gardening take up 40% of household water • Decreasing demand for tap water • Cost: $99-$115

Green Roof River Rouge Plant: Dearborn, MI • What it is: roof that is either partially or completely covered with vegetation • Low maintenance • Absorbs rainwater • Provides insulation • Wildlife habitation • Reduces heating and pollutants • Largest green roof: Ford • $15-$20 per sq. ft. City Hall: Chicago
Composting Toilets • What it is: toilet that flushes with little to no toilet water • Flushing: Aerobic processing • Waste is usually mixed with sawdust, coconut coir and peat moss • These by-products support the process, absorb liquids and reduce the odor • Composting toilets can cost anywhere between $400 and $2,000
Sustainable Flooring Cork and Wine flooring • What it is: materials that reduces demands on an ecosystem • Creates safer and healthier buildings • Lower environmental impacts • Wood • Bamboo • Cork • Linoleum • Rubber • Coconut Timber • Natural & Recycle Carpet Bamboo
LED Light Bulbs • What it is: bulbs that use light-emitting diodes as light • Long service life • Interchangeable • Cost-efficient
End Result • By using all of these green components in the new cabin will reduce the cost of the cabin and will also extend the lifespan of this cabin.
