  3. Where and When Was John Written? • Possibly the end of the first century (80-90AD) • Evidence suggests that John died in Ephesus and that this Gospel was written near there • This was the 4th Gospel written Ephesus

  4. Themes of the Gospels • Matthew = written to Jews that Jesus fulfilled the law of God. • Mark = Peter told the story of Jesus to the Roman Christians and Mark wrote it down. • Luke = He was a doctor and was Paul’s friend. He wrote to a Christian named Theophilus, we think he was a Greek. • John = wrote to Jewish Christians that Jesus was God.

  5. John 1 • 1:1 = Jesus is God • 1:10 = Jesus came to reach those he created • 1:12 = The right to be children of God • 1:14-18 = What does dwell among us mean? • Notice that John uses belief and receive often • John wants you to make a decision about Jesus….

  6. John 2, 5, 6 • Three major gods at Ephesus • Dionysius = the god of wine • Asclepius = the god of healing • Demeter = the goddess of bread • How does John show us that Jesus is greater than these gods?

  7. John 3 • Nicodemus was a Rabbi, Jewish ruler, and teacher • He was struggling to understand Jesus • 3:9 How can this be? • 7:51 Shouldn’t we listen to Jesus? • 19:39 Jesus is there to bury Jesus! • Are you like Nicodemus • What does it mean to be “Born Again” or “Born from Above”? • How does baptism fit into this?

  8. John 4 • Jews have nothing to do with Samaritans • Samaritans seen as bad people • Men do not talk with women • Jesus violates his social boundaries

  9. John 5 and 6 • Healing = “Do you want to get better?” • Jesus has power to heal—but do you want to be healed? • Bread = commitment to Jesus • Where else can we go?
