  1. Manifest Destiny Janna Collins and Kayla Sible

  2. The Phase of Manifest Destiny • The move westward to expand the United States of America • - This lasted over 4 years, and the U.S. gained more than 60% of land • - Mexico was going through some major political changes at this time • - The threat of Imperialism was coming from the British

  3. Supporters of Manifest Destiny • People with religious backgrounds strongly supported Manifest Destiny • They believed that it was their divine calling • Meaning that God wanted them all to move out and on to new opportunities. • Fulfill their American destiny • They needed to spread out and acquire the new land they had obtained ever since the Louisiana Purchase • Many wanted to spread Christianity to the natives that they would see on their journey.

  4. Supporters of Manifest Destiny • Other Americans would move out for monetary reasons • Most wanted to continue on with the fur trading business that had developed in Canada. • It was far less expensive to live in the west compared to the established east coast. • Sought a life of riches that they thought would be awaiting them in the west.

  5. Who opposed Manifest Destiny • Native Americans opposed Manifest destiny • They were being pushed yet again from their land and had to deal with the religious reformers • Their tradition and cultures were constantly suppressed by invading white men

  6. Who opposed Manifest Destiny • Mexicans in the Texas territory were very annoyed because they had just won their independence and then we took away their land by annexing Texas. • True-blooded European Americans felt that the Mexicans and Native Americans were a far lower class.

  7. Classism in America • White, Protestant men who were determined to grow their empire were the dominant race in Manifest Destiney. • Many of these Americans believed that they were superior to the • Indians • Africans, • Asian and Hispanic immigrants, • Catholics • and women were deemed lesser than them.

  8. International affairs • After the annexation of Texas the Centralist Republic of Mexico decided they wanted to fight back against the Americans. • Americans easily acquired California and New Mexico during the war. • After setting a blockade around the pacific we captured Mexico City • We won the war quickly • All at the hand of President James k Polk

  9. Benefits • Expanding Americans VS. Native American “Heathens”

  10. Students opinion • We do not believe that the right decisions were made. America became overcome by greed, but covered it up with a “Religious purpose”. We encroached on Indian land that we had given to them through numerous treaties yet we still took it away and killed thousands. We should have stopped before we reached the Pacific because we used our dominance to take away the rightful land of Mexicans and Indians.
