Pros and Cons of what each culture added or took away. New World Additions European Additions • New World plants revolutionized the economy. (Tobacco, maize, corn, beans, tomatoes) • Approximate 3/5s of the crops cultivated today are from the Americas. • Domesticate animals such as cattle, swine and horses were introduced to the new world. • Germs that caused havoc on the local populations. (90% of Native Americans perished with CC’s landfall)
Spanish Conquistadores • Spanish became the dominant exploring and colonizing power in the 1500s. • Vasco Nunez Balboa discovered the Pacific Ocean and areas near Panama.
The hope for gold is replaced. • The idea of finding a sea route to Asia was replaced with gaining new territory for Spain. • Starting in Cuba and moving through Mexico and starting from Panama to Peru, Spain had conquered the Aztecs and the Incas.
Hernan Cortez • Conquistador leader who had a contact with the monarchy, financed by investors in Spain and went out and recruited men for his army. • (Approximately half of Cortez’s expedition were professional soldiers and sailors, the rest were peasants, artisans and the middle class.) • He had man power but more importantly he • had horse, Mastiffs, and the myth of fifty-two years.
Quetzalcoatl • Quetzalcoatl was a mythical god and also a great Toltec leader. Who reigned during Cortez arrival to Mexico. • “Q” was the god of intelligence and self-reflection of priests. He was the feathered serpent of the Mayans, and the god of the wind to the Aztecs. • He was also patron god of the Aztec priest hood of learning and knowledge.
The luck of Cortez Arrival Belief of the Aztecs/Toltecs • Cortez sailed in from the east with white, billowing sails. • He arrived in 1519, and he was white! • Riding horses and large barking dogs, Cortez gave the appearance of a god. • Believed Q was the white, feathered serpent. • The sun, moon and the twenty day harvest calendar were aligned every 52 years. 1519 was the 52 years of alignment.
