  2. What is a Misconception? mis·con·cep·tion (Noun) A view or opinion that is incorrect because based on faulty thinking or understanding.

  3. Misconception #1 WRONG! Adult Learners are just non-traditional students.

  4. Who are Adult Learners? RIGHT! • Adult learners want to better themselves and their education • They could have: • Took time off • Started working • Wanted to return to school to pursue degree for their job • Want to be able to support their family There are millions of adult learners pursing a degree today!

  5. Misconception #2 WRONG! The adult development theory is only about adults learning from mistakes and moving on.

  6. Adult Development & Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Model RIGHT! Development has been defined as “systematic change within an individual or a group of individuals that results from a dynamic interaction of heredity and environmental influences” Erikson’s model mentions how everyone is faced with a problem, they make a decision and move on to the next stage Model is in practice today because everyone learns from their mistakes and experiences

  7. Misconception #3 WRONG! The Social Cognitive Learning Theory talks about social skills in learning in the classroom.

  8. The Social Cognitive Learning Theory RIGHT! “The social cognitive learning theory highlights the idea that much human learning occurs in a social environment. By observing others, people acquire knowledge, rules, skills, strategies, beliefs, and attitudes (Merriam, 2007).” Basis for observational learning In practice today: We all learn from watching others in the classroom and determine right from wrong
