Simple Machines Make work easier!
What are Simple machines? • A simple machineis an unpowered mechanical device • Thereare six basic types of simple machines: • inclined plane • wedge • screw • lever • wheel and axle • pulley
Inclined plane • Description: • a flat, slanted surface • How they make work easier: • Increases the distance (small force over long distance) • Longer the incline plane, the greater mechanical advantage (easier it is to push or pull)
Wedge • Description: • thick at one end and thin at the other end (2 incline planes put together) • Splits things apart • How it makes work easier: • Increases the distance (small force over long distance) • Longer and thinner the wedge, the greater the mechanical advantage (the easier it is to split things)
Screws • Description: • an inclined plane wrapped around a center, forming a spiral. • How it makes work easier: • Increases the distance (small force over long distance) • Closer together the threads (spiral) the greater the mechanical advantage (the easier it is to pull together)
Wheels and axles • Description: • Two circular objects that are connected together and rotate on an axis. • The large object is called the wheel. • The small object (stick) is called the axle. • How it makes work easier: • Increases your force • Bigger the wheel, the greater the mechanical advantage (the easier it is to turn) wheel Axle
Pulleys • Description: • a rope that is wrapped around a grooved wheel. • How it makes work easier: • changes the direction • Increases force • The more ropes a pulley has, the greater the mechanical advantage (the easier it is to lift things up)
Levers • Description: • a rigid bar that rotates on a fixed point called the fulcrum • Different Classes: • 1stclass: fulcrum is in middle • 2nd class: resistance (output) in middle • 3rdclass: effort (input) in middle • How it makes work easier: • 1st: changes directions • 2nd: increases the distance • 3rd: increases force 123 FRE
