  4. Objective • After this lesson, you will: • Understand what the Cold War was. • Understand the origins of the Cold War.

  5. Agenda • Where the Cold War starts • The Yalta Conference • Truman pushes the right buttons • The Iron Curtain descends

  6. What is the Cold War? • No shots fired between Russia and the US! • Huge arms race. • Fight wars with “Proxy Nations” (Korea, Vietnam) • Lots of espionage • Bitter words on a regular basis • Nuclear weapons, fear of World War prevent huge armed conflict

  7. The Difference Between Communism and Capitalism • Communism • State controls everything • Sets prices • Sets wages • Owns all property • Owns all business • Eventual goal: eliminate all competition, create a classless society with no government, in the meantime, the government does whatever necessary to continue the “Revolution” towards this Utopian society, including bloody conflict inside the state and outside • Capitalism • State attempts to regulate as little as possible and encourage competition • Never sets prices • Will enforce a minimum wage • Attempts to not interfere in competition or the market • Regulates as little as possible • Eventual goal: A highly competitive market where everyone shares in some type of wealth and the elimination of poverty with as little government regulation as possible

So where does it start? • Yalta Conference, February 1945 • Preceded by the Tehran Conference in 1943 • Three important decisions agreed upon: • Germany split into four zones (pg 533), pay reparations only when ready • Poland has split government, Stalin promises elections asap! • Declaration of a Liberated Europe says all countries choose their government

Russians Begin to Defy the YC • Following the Conference, Russians begin to not honor the above agreements • Force King of Romania to appoint Communist government • Won’t let non-Communists to participate in Polish government • No signs of a Polish election • Tensions also arise over: • Russia’s security concerns • American economic concerns

Truman’s Moves • Truman will not make the same mistakes with Stalin that were made with Hitler • July 1945, Potsdam Conference • Truman and Stalin meet to discuss Germany • Truman wants to revive Germany • Stalin wants reparations from Germany • Both sides find it hard to compromise • Truman mentions the atomic bomb, makes Stalin paranoid

  12. The Iron Curtain Descends • Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia fall under Communist regimes • Called “Satellite Nations” because they are controlled by Moscow • Comes to be known as the “Iron Curtain” separating Europe (page 536)
