High quality oral work is a high currency learning activity when getting our students to think about, organise and articulate their ideas. Often, our students have difficulty expressing themselves and are unaware of the different ways that one person can take part in any given discussion. Here is just one way to help students become more confident with their talk whilst also actively supporting ALL students to make at least one point during a discussion leading to a written outcome.
Talk for Writing should happen at three levels .... • Teacher talk:the verbalisation of the thoughtprocesses involved, as the teacher is demonstrating and modelling various stages or aspects of the writing/problem solving process. • Guiding children’s talk: structured andscaffolded opportunities for children to develop and practise all the different aspects of talk for writing through class and group conversations and activities. • Independent children’s talk:opportunities for children to develop and practise talk for writing in pairs and small groups, independent of the teacher.
To be productive, Talk for Writing needs to be embedded in every phase of the teaching sequence • During reading:when familiarising with the problem and its key features • Before writing:when generating ideas, preparing for and planning writing. • During all stages of writing: when making choices involved in creating, developing and improving solutions. • After writing:when reflecting on and learning from a writing/problem solving experience.
Read speculate discuss card game teachernotes.doc and try it with some of the discussion points/QWC questions that follow. Try with a group of teachers first to get the idea. Great to use at team meetings.
