  2. Annotation • Annotation is your thoughts about the text in written form. • Annotation is your conversation with what you’re reading written in the margins so you can easily access that information later.

  3. Thesis • A thesis is a statement or theory that is put forth to be proven correct. • Basically, a thesis is what the author is trying to prove.

  4. Tone • Tone in writing is the writer's attitude towards the readers or the material that is being written.

  5. Tone: Optimistic, Skeptical, or Humorous? • The government is investing a great deal of money in a new campaign about the dangers of a using a cell-phone while driving. I doubt it will stop many people from talking on the phone while they drive.

  6. Tone: Optimistic, Skeptical, or Humorous? • Although not many schools are using laptop computers in schools at the moment, I'm confident that in the future, as the costs go down, we will find that every student has access to one.

  7. Tone: Optimistic, Skeptical, or Humorous? • The woman was a terrible singer. But she was rich, so she made her own albums which she called (incredibly) "the beauty of the human voice"!!! It was so bad that people bought them as a joke.

  8. Tone: Optimistic, Skeptical, or Humorous? • Finally, the government is devoting a substantial sum of money to fighting traffic accidents. This is money well spent. Too many people are killed or injured in traffic accidents in this country and more should be done about it. This is a step in the right direction.

  10. Historical Narratives • Historical Context – the information about what is going on historically in a setting of a piece of literature or writing. • Before we read The Crucible, I gave you historical context when I told about the puritans and their life style.

  11. Historical Narratives • To find the historical context, look for words and clues that inform what time period, place, and/or historical event is happening. • The sun was setting as the leader of the Nazi party got ready to deliver his grand speech.

  12. Historical Narratives • Primary Sources are materials written by people who were participants in or observers of the events written about. • Letters, diaries, journals, speeches, autobiographies, and interviews are all primary sources.

  13. Historical Narratives • Secondary Sources are records of events written by people who were not directly involved or present in the events. • History books and biographies are secondary sources.
