  1. Prepared for the Laboratory for Product and Process Design Created by Eric Lueshen Advisor: Andreas A. Linninger Presented on March 10, 2011 Targeted Drug Delivery to the Brain & Central Nervous System

  2. Summary of My Progressing Research • Collaboration with Dr. Rossi at Rush: • Gained card access to facilities • Zetasizer Nano ZS • Fluorescence and confocal microscopes • Started training with Dr. Hartley • MNP characterization next week • Magnetic-guidance of nanoparticles: • Successful CED of dye experiments • Gaussmeter – researched and parts being ordered • 2-D & 3-D simulations on Comsol • Dr. Rossi ordering new module for Comsol • Acquiring MNPs from new collaborator (Dr. Woloschak at NU) • PBPK scaling paper ready for submission

  3. Computer Simulations and in vivo CED of Fluorescent NPs

  4. Funding Our Research • Proposals: • NSF REU supplement proposal • “Experimental design and computational optimization of therapeutic nanoparticle delivery to the brain” • NSF proposal on MNP transport and agglomeration: • “Fundamental mechanisms of electromagnetically guided nanoparticle transport” • CBC Catalyst Award proposal: • “Functionalized nanocarriers for targeted image-guided brain cancer treatment” • Inter-institutional collaboration: • Dr. Linninger – University of Illinois at Chicago • Dr. Woloschak – Northwestern University • Dr. Yamini – University of Chicago

  5. Plan for next two weeks • Finish microscopy training with Dr. Hartley • Re-characterize the Swiss MNPs (different protocols) • Conduct magnetic-guidance experiment in agarose gel • Start building gaussmeter with Joe • Meet with Dr. Woloschak at NU & acquire new MNPs • Help Mike with revisions of article on CED of fluorescent NPs • Continue advising the MNP Sr. Design group with experiments
