This project implemented lean six sigma principles to streamline purchasing processes across DoD libraries, resulting in significant cost savings. Ongoing support includes enterprise-wide purchasing, updated library standards, and continued championing of new library facilities.

Lean Six Sigma Project – Spring 2008 • Enterprise-wide purchasing across the services. • Each service responsible for certain purchases. • Titles purchases were placed on Military OneSource, Army Knowledge Online, Defense Knowledge Online, Navy Knowledge Online, and My Air Force portal • Project saved dollars, supported Families and deployments, provided common levels of service across libraries) - Spent $7M on databases, e-books, audio books; if purchased individually by each service, cost would have been $14M – a savings of $7M - Spent $5.6M on OIF/OEF - Spent $1M on MOS Call Centers

Moving Forward • Continued support for enterprise purchasing: - Electronic Databases - OIF/OEF with paperback kits and Playaways - MOS Call Centers - Programs, i.e. summer reading, gaming, etc. • Standards for Joint Based Libraries • Joint Based Libraries funded as premier models • Centralized electronic DoD library catalog providing access to all library holdings in DoD • Champion for new library facilities
