  1. Writing numbers to 20 Dr Fog Presents Year 1 (National Numeracy Strategy) (Based on DFEE Sample Lessons)

  2. Resources • Beads in two colours and laces. • Number ‘washing line’ • Large 0-20 number cards (1 card per child.) • Small 0-20 number cards (1 card per child) • 2 x 3 grids made from 5cm squared paper • Box of large counters.

  3. Mental Learning Objective • I can count on from small numbers. • I can count in fives.

  4. Mental Learning Task • Today we are going to learn how to count quickly by grouping things in fives.

  5. Mental Learning Task • You can count the beads quickly using that the beads arranged in fives.

  6. Mental Learning Task • Can you point to 7 on the washing line. • How many beads do I now have?

  7. Mental Learning Task • Your teacher will now show you different threads of beads. • How many has she got? • Count on each time in 5.

  8. Mental Learning Objective • I can count on from small numbers. • I can count in fives.

  9. Main Learning Objective • I can read and write number to 20. • I can put numbers into order in the plenary.

  10. Main Learning Task • Today we are going to work as a class. • We are going to practise reading and writing numbers up to 20.

  11. Main Learning Task • Count the numbers up to 20 on the number ‘Washing line’ • Give out blank 2 x 3 number grids to each child. • Choose 6 numbers in the boxes.

  12. Choose your favourite number from the numbers on the number washing line. Main Learning Task

  13. Think of a friend and write their age in that box. Main Learning Task

  14. Write down how many children are on your table. Main Learning Task

  15. Write down how many pencils you see. Main Learning Task

  16. Write down how many live in your house? Main Learning Task

  17. Write down how many pets you have. Main Learning Task

  18. Main Learning Task • When all the boxes are filled, use the grids to play Bingo with the class. • Put a box of counters on each table. • Shuffle a set of 1 to 20 cards and turn over one at a time.

  19. Main Learning Task • Call out each number. • Continue until each child has covered all their numbers with counters. • Play this game two or three times.

  20. Main Learning Task • Challenge:- • As you take numbers from the pack, invite children to say something about them.

  21. Main Learning Objective • I can read and write number to 20. • I can put numbers into order in the plenary.

  22. Plenary • Give out number cards randomly to all the children in the class. • Ask them to arrange themselves in a line. • One by one in numerical order.
