It provides healthcare for the very poor (Medicaid), those 65 and older (Medicare) and those in the military. Everyone else must buy health insurance, hope to get it as a benefit from their job, or be uninsured.
More Facts Today, 50 million Americans do not have health insurance. This means they must pay cash to see a doctor or be in the hospital. An operation or hospital stay can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and most people cannot afford it. A recent study has found that 45,000 Americans die each year from not having health insurance.
Health Insurance Health insurance averages $300 - $500 a month for a single person, $800 - $1500 a month for a family. Even with these fees, health insurance companies usually only pay 60% - 80% of the medical bills, so healthcare can still be very expensive.
Obamacare • President Obama has been working with Congress to make laws that will help all Americans have health insurance. This is called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, but is better known as Obamacare. • The goals of Obamacare are to: • Make health insurance more affordable • Lower the uninsured rate • Reduce the cost of healthcare • This has been very controversial and many Republicans feel the Federal Government does not have the constitutional right to become involved in healthcare. (Traditionally controlled by the States.) They also worry that the government cannot afford these laws.
