Acanthamoeba • Acanthamoeba is a very serious as well as painful disease. There are three different types of Acanthamoeba; Acanthamoeba keratitis, Granulomatous Amebic Encephalitis, and Disseminated Infection. All three of these call for different treatments since they are three different types of Acanthamoeba. This disease was first discovered in humans in the 1970’s when the polio vaccine came out. Plaques appeared in cell cultures used to make the polio vaccines and were thought to be virus induced(CDC).
Cycle of Acanthamoeba Acanthamoeba has two stages in its life cycle: a trophozoite stage and a cyst stage. Both the trophozoite and the cyst are uninucleate, although binucleatetrophozoites are occasionally seen
Acanthamoeba keratitis • The improper use of contacts can give someone Acanthamoeba keratitis. It can be found in unsanitary water, unsanitary cases for contacts, and unsanitary solution for contacts. Showering, swimming, and swapping lenses can also cause Acanthamoeba keratitis. Sometimes it is treatable with eye drops or some other form of medication, and sometimes surgery will be someone's only option (CDC)

GranulomatousAmebic Encephalitis • This is what Granulomatous Amebic Encephalitis will look like in the brain. A person will then have to have get a brain or spinal cord tap. They will have to take a needle and draw fluid from the spine and test that fluid to see if it is Acanthamoeba (CDC).
Two cases of Acanthamoeba in Arkansas. • A 12 year old girl from Arkansas had Acanthamoeba, she got this from a water park that she went to. Her mother got her to the hospital in just the right time. Kali has now gone to therapy and should be on her way to a speedy recovery(ABC). • A 7 year old boy gets Acanthamoeba keratitis from standing, dirty water. It started out as the doctor thought it was pink eye. It progressively got worse and then they found out it was Acanthamoeba keratitis. He has eye drops that are made out of swimming pool cleaner and put into an liquid form(Glisovic).
Treatment options • All three types of Acanthamoeba are treated differently depending on the severity of it and if it is caught in time. Acanthamoeba keratitis can be treated with eye drops and sometimes it can not. Granulomatous Amebic Encephalitis sometimes is not found until the person has already died. Disseminated infection is treated differently depending on how severe it is. All three of these are different because each one has the potential to be life threatening.
