Today’s plan • Greeting • Review Asg #4 • Lesson:Problem-Solving Strategies, and Certainty • Homework / Questions • Clean-up
Strategies • What strategies can help you solve a problem?
Easy • Ask someone. • Trial and error. Also known as “guess and check.” • Name things. Invent notation. • After a while, set it aside and come back later.
For Harder Problems • Restate the problem in your own words. • Explain the problem to someone else. • Organize your information about the problem. • Look for structure in the problem. • Draw a picture, make a model, or act it out. • Write equations.
More Techniques for Hard Problems • Check all possibilities. • Be systematic, though; organize your search! • Identify subgoals. • “I want Y. But if I knew X, I could get Y.” • Simplify the problem. • (This can make it easier to check all possibilities!)
Los Angeles Times, Mar. 6, 1966 This appeared in the Sunday edition of the LA Times, as part of a full-page ad paid for by a Mr. D.W. Arthur. Supposedly, it’s a way to trisect an angle.
Homework • For next class (Thursday/Friday): • 20 minutes on Khan Academy problems. • Week 3 Journal • For Monday: Asg #5.
Clean-up / Reminders • Pick up all trash / items. • Push in chairs (at front and back tables). • See you tomorrow!
