What is a Defining Moment? • It is an event, an action, a situation or experience that starts change. • It can be: • Personal • National • Global
In the Historical context… • Significant • Represent something, needs to be of great importance • Cause and Effect • Starts” change or a action • Affect a point of view • Change peoples thinking or view • Transform beliefs, rules or ideologies
It can be personal • An event that happens to you that “transforms” you • Made you mature • Changed your view • Marked a special time • Represents a turning point for you
It can be National • Happens to a nation/country and affects a whole group of people for the b E.g. Immigration (Canada’s policy)- after 1970 • The Changing of Immigration policy affects many things • It gives Canada a new reputation– “welcoming + accepting” • This means that OUR IDENTITY is changing as a nation • This both significant and causes change!
It can be Global • An action that affects the world (+ve or –ve) • War • Oil Crisis (shortage of oil) • Natural Disaster • Discussion: How did this image change/affect the world? • What rules changed?
When judging a moment as defining: The criteria (the guidelines) • A defining moment needs to have MEANING • It needs to be important • It needs to be a turning point • It needs to “change” something • Change an attitude, a view, a perspective • It can spark “movement” or action”
