Hug Machine: Deep pressure stimulation By: Chris Morino BME 281
Autism • What is it: rare gene changes or mutations occur leading to the child being diagnosed • Effects: difficulties in social interaction, high anxiety and stress level, repetitive behaviors • 1 in 88 American child has been identified on the autism spectrum, and tenfold increase in prevalence over the last 40 years
Invented by Temple Grandin (1965) • Fought Autism as an Adult • Came up with the idea while watching cattle being branded on her aunt’s farm History
Experiment • Pilot study performed using this machine • Had a experimental group and placebo group • Two 20 min sessions a week over a 6 week period • Results: those in the experimental group have shown positive calming effects especially those with high levels of arousal or anxiety
Machine cost over 4000 • BME students from Carnegie University redesign the machine to help those who struggle with finances • First place in National Student design competition 2007 Redesign
