1. The idea of CS4016 placements • Full academic year (9-12 months) in “the real world” • Shorter placements are your own responsability • After year 3. Before year 4. • Typically in industry. • Serious work in Computing Science. • Typically for a competitive salary (approx £15.000-£20.000 p/a) • 50% of your fees; no council tax • Marked (two written reports and one oral report) • but not counting for your degree classification • Enhanced degree, “… with industrial placement”. For example: • BSc Information Systems (with Ind Plac) • BSc Computing Science (AI) (with Ind Plac)
2. Why placements? • Some people feel like taking a break • You learn a new “skill set” • Good for academic performance in year 4 • Scientific evidence from the literature • Anecdotal evidence at CSD • Work experience helps to find a good job • possibly even with the same company

3 History of placements at CSD • Numbers of students on placement: • Before 2007-2008: 4-5 per year • 2007-2008: 1 • 2008-2009: 4 • The old approach: • only for students with CAS 15 • Only in the UK (except SUN-START) • Not a lot of support
3 History of placements at CSD • The new approach (starting 2007-2008): • Any student admitted to level 4 • Anywhere where we can support you • UK • “Neighbouring” countries • Elsewhere in special cases • More support than before
