You don’t even need to graph a situation to tell it’s linear. • You can read the problem: • - Linear functions increase or decrease by the same (constant) rate. • (add)(subtract) • You can look at a table: • Both variables in a linear function will increase or decrease at constant rates. • Examples: Explain why the following situations are linear. • 1) A farmer is filling containers with peanuts to sell at a local market. He is filling the containers at roughly 20 beans per scoop.
2) Dione makes $10.50 per hour. Remember this one? 3) Candice is a building manager for the Crowley Enterprise office building. One of her responsibilities is cleaning the office building’s 200-gallon aquarium. For cleaning, she must remove the fish and drain the water. The water drains at a constant rate of 10 gallons per minute. 4) Jermaine loves music. He can lip sync almost any song at a moment’s notice. He joined Songs When I Want Them, an online music store. By becoming a member, Jermaine can purchase just about any song he wants. Jermaine pays $1 per song.
Writing Equations from Situations Write an equation that describes each situation. 1) A 10,000 gallon swimming pool is being drained at a rate of 720 gallons per hour. Define the variables (use the rate)
2) A plane was flying at 36,000 feet when it started its descent toward the airport. The plane descends at a rate of 850 feet per minute. 3)The price of a large, cheese pizza is $7.95 plus $0.75 for each topping on the pizza.
Eric is 2 years younger than 2 times his sister’s age. Write an equation for the area of a rectangle whose length is 6 ft more than its width.
6) An online music club charges $5.75 for the first music download and $2 for each additional download per month.
