  1. PSCI 183 Earth Science for Elementary Teachers

  2. What is Earth Science?

  3. Earth Science • All sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space • Subdisciplines • Geology • Oceanography • Meteorology • Astronomy

  4. Importance of Earth Science • Resources • Environmental Problems

  5. Resources • Renewable • plants and animals for food • fibers for clothing • forests for lumber and paper • energy from water, wind and sun • Nonrenewable • metals • iron • aluminum • copper • fuels • oil • natural gas • coal

  6. Environmental Problems • Human Induced • Natural Disasters

  7. Environmental Problems • Pollution • Human Induced • Acid Rain • Ozone depletion • Global warning

  8. Environmental Problems • Natural Disasters • Earthquakes • Volcanoes • Hurricanes • Tsunamis Asiantsunamivideos.com

  9. The Nature of Scientific Inquiry • Hypothesis “Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I’ll remember, involve me and I’ll understand” • An educated guess based upon observation. • A rational explanation of a single event or phenomenon – based on observation and has not been proved. • Can be supported or refuted by experimentation or continued observation. • Theory • An explanation of a set of related observations or events • Based upon proven hypotheses and verified multiple times by detached groups of researchers. • One scientist cannot create a theory; he can only create a hypothesis (Theory of Evolution, Theory of Relativity, Quantum Theory) • Scientific Law • Accepted to be true and universal • Accepted at face value based upon fact they have always been observed to be true. (Law of Gravity, Law of Thermodynamics)

  10. Topics Covered in PSCI 183 • Rocks and Minerals • Earth’s Processes • Water, Wind and Glaciers • Earthquakes • Volcanoes • Oceans • Atmosphere • Weather and Climate • Solar System Next class meeting – please read Chapter 1 – print “mineral’s lab”
