Maintaining your tech April 2014 Gus Falkenberg / Kris Schwartz
Welcome We have 3 main areas to cover today: • General • Staff Computers • Public Computers Plus, we'll leave lots of time at the end for questions.
General Simple to save you time and frustration
General • Basic Troubleshooting for minor issues – Even before you submit a Helpdesk Ticket • Restart • Make sure the computer is on • Cords/cables plugged in tight • Check for and remove any thumb drives • Check for and remove any CDs/DVDs in the drive • If none of those things work, submit a Helpdesk Ticket
General • What to do when something happens – Virus/BSOD • Do not unplug the computer • Stop what you’re doing and submit a helpdesk ticket. Don’t close any windows or click on anything. • Only call if it’s an emergency
General • Help Desk Tickets • http://helpdesk.iflsweb.org • Include as many details as possible • Double check your e-mail address • Include your phone number • Keep an eye out for responses. If you submit a ticket during the day, check your e-mail for a response. • If we helped you with your problem, please mark the ticket as resolved. • Always try to let us know whether our help was successful.
General • Windows XP is going away.
General • OPAC – Online Public Access Catalog • Don’t update them • Use your leftover computers, or… • Use a Raspberry Pi
Staff Computers The easy stuff
Staff Computers • Updates • What updates should you do • Ninite
Staff Computers • Internet Safety • What things to look for when doing searches on the Internet • What not to click • Dangerous search terms • Opening email attachments/using personal e-mail on staff computers • And now, some examples…
Staff Computers • Basic Cleaning • Keep vents on computer clear. (vacuum) • Don’t use paper towels on LCD/LED (flat) monitors. Use a soft cloth with a little Windex on it.
Public Computers If we just didn’t let the public use them…
Public Computers • Updates • If you have Deep Freeze • Leave computers on Wednesday Night • Run Ninite as needed for Reader, Java, Firefox • Update Flash manually • If you still have Smart Shield • Run Windows Updates and Symantec Antivirus updates on the second Wednesday of the month • We are in the process of replacing Smart Shield
Public Computers • Pharos Signup Computer • Do not update • Restart once a week
Public Computers • What’s Allowed? • Games? • Skype? • File Sharing? • Users installing their own software?
Public Computers • Filtering • Most programs do more harm than good. • You have to be able to turn off the filters at the users request • We have some options if your or your board feels filtering is necessary
Public Computers • Policies • You have an Internet Use policy, right? • You have a Wireless Use policy, right? • Your policies are Board Approved, reasonable, and legal, right? • If you have questions about your current policy or lack thereof, contact Gus.
