Jesus and the Law • Jesus was not a legalist (someone who observes law strictly regardless of circumstance). • Jesus put concern for people above the observance of the law. • Jesus knew the law and approved of it, but disapproved when people used the law to bad ends.
Moral Muscle • Minimalism is doing the least required of us by law. Minimalists are often times at odds with living a morally good life. • Moral muscle is pushing ourselves past the minimums and doing more to make the world a better place.
Letter vs. Spirit • The letter of the law doing something because the law says so. • The spirit of the law is acting in response to the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. • Laws are typically the minimum a person is required to do. Jesus wants us to do more.
Jesus the role model • Jesus told us to “be perfect… as your heavenly Father is perfect”. Mt. 5:48 • Jesus was the perfect role model for us, in that He was perfect in every way. • Being Christ-like is the goal and participation in the Sacraments like Eucharist and Reconciliation help us to get closer to that goal because the sacraments give us God’s grace.
Communion of Saints • In addition to Jesus, we have a bevy of role models to follow. The saints. • In death, the canonized saints leave a legacy of
