  2. Where is Spain? • Spain is one of the most western nations in Europe • It holds one of the largest coastal regions in western Europe • It’s climate is very hot and humid, with a combination of deciduous forest and desert biomes • Capital city is Madrid

Spain During World War Two • Spain began the war in 1939 by providing the necessary economic support to Germany and the Axis powers under the rule of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco • But, once the Allies surveyed this behaviour for long enough, the Allies imposed oil embargoes on Spain (restricting sale and purchase of oil as they did to Japan)

  4. More… • Spain, realizing its need for oil and other natural resources, met several demands set forth by the Allies. These included: • Spain remain neutral throughout the war • Disallow German spies to operate in Spain • Withdraw its volunteer troops from Axis support • Halt all exports to Germany and the Axis • Cease all Anti-Semitic action • Spain then sent its volunteer troops to assist the Germans in Operation Barbossaat the Russian front • The US then cut Spain off from nearly 1/3 of its allotted oil imports • Following this Spain remained relatively cooperative • However, when caught allowing Nazi planes to refuel, the US further reduced their allotted oil transports

Spain since World War Two • In 1953, Spain signed a mutual defense agreement with the United States called the Pact of Madrid • With this, the US provided economic assistance to Spain in the amount of one billion US dollars, boosting its agricultural sectors and natural resources • However, immediately following this growth, Spain’s economy dropped, and the country became quite poor • Spain began a stabilization program in 1960s that brought in more banks, trades, education, and following this the country flourished for years to come • Franco’s rule ended in 1975

Culture: Sport • Bullfighting is Spain’s national sport • Andalucia, Spain is home to nearly 70 bullfighting rings • A bullfight requires a matador (the man who lures the bull close for the kill as well as two assistants assist) • This began in public squares, but was placed into rings by the 18th centuries • The goal of bullfighting: to kill the bull with skill and remain unscathed

  7. Culture: Food • Being that Spain’s location has an abundance of coast, it is no wonder that the majority of their ethnic food contains sea food • The focus of most cooking is fruit, hot spices, curries, and sea food

  8. Currently in Spain • The Current population is approximately 48,000,000 • They have a Unitary Parliamentary government, similar to Canada, but with a active Monarchy • Spain’s average daily temperature is 18 degrees Celsius • Spain’s motto is: “Further Beyond”
