  2. Something about Restore Agenda • What is this Restore about? The backup does not really matter until you are able to restore • How do we Backup right? What is to be includes into a backup to successfully restore a server • What about Active Directory? Possible System State and Authoritative restore issues

  3. Something about Restore What system is considered to be fault tolerant? • Which implements RAID volumes? No. • Which has redundant servers? Not really. • Which implements backups? Depends on. • A system that is able to recover and continue working in the event of the failure.

Something about Restore The fact is that most administrators have never tried to restore their servers What do they face at the moment of failure? • The backup does not contain all the necessary data • The restore procedure is not tested and documented • The necessary hardware and software is not in place failure

  5. Something about Restore How do we backup right? • Make copies of all data processed within the enterprise. Do not consider anything to be unimportant until it really is; • Make backups of all mission-critical computers; • Backup system drive as a whole, not the System State only; • Do not backup Domain Controllers using disk cloning software (check for “USN Rollback” and “Lingering Objects” issues); • Remember to have installation media, serial numbers and tools like screwdriverand cables. Something about Restore Automate the backup • Automate the backup process by using Task Scheduler; • Create multiple copies: • Keep local copy for quick access • Keep network copy for additional reliability • Keep offsite copy for disaster recovery • Maintain the backup rotation depth • Check the backup quality on a regular basis; • Test and document the restoration process.Make sure the responsible personnel is trained and documentation is easy to find.
