Review: Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) • Non proprietary digital message format, based on XML, that provides for Interoperability in all-hazard warning • Compatible with current geocoding schema (e.g., NWR Specific Area Message Encoding and Emergency Alert System) • Partnership for Public Warning • Warning systems in the United States today are “a patchwork of technologies and processes.” • Need to distribute warnings consistently over all available channels.

Other Current Activities • Call-to-Action Markers in existing NWS Watch/Warning/Advisory/Follow-up Statements • Needed to enable discreet CAP Description and Instruction elements • Partner coordination and input resulted in improved markers • Deployment in AWIPS OB9 – 1st quarter CY09 • Service Change Notice to be issued soon • Documenting NWS CAP Profile • Federal D/A Partners forming CAP working groups under IPAWS to work with emergency & standards communities • Including standards and profiles working groups
Future Activities • Incremental changes to CAP v1.1 Beta feed (late 2008 and 2009) • Wrap CAP in WMO-formatted product and push on text feeds (2009) • Work with OASIS EMTC on CAP v2.0 development (18-24 month cycle expected)
OASIS Membership • Identified Level of Membership and funding source • Membership agreement currently in review by Dept. of Commerce General Counsel • NWS OCIO starting procurement process
