  1. IEEE Technical Committee on Multimedia Computing Chair: Shu-Ching Chen School of Computing and Information Sciences Florida International University

  2. Main Activities and Programs • Successfully sponsored and co-sponsored nine IEEE international conferences/workshops including several new conference technical co-sponsorships such as IEEE International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration (IRI). • Organized two special issues with International Journal of Semantic Computing (IJSC) and International Journal of Multimedia Data Engineering and Management (IJMDEM).

  3. Main Activities and Programs (cont.) • Established six TCMC special interest groups • SIGMUSP (SIG on Multimedia Security and Privacy) • SIGMDM(SIG on Multimedia Data Mining) • SIGSMM (SIG on Semantic Multimedia Management) • SIGASP (SIG on  Audio and Speech Processing for Multimedia) • SIGMTEL (SIG on  Multimedia Technologies for E-Learning) • SIGVA (SIG on Video Analytics) • Two Executive Committee meetings were held in 2011 in conjunction with 2011 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (July 12, 2011, Barcelona, Spain) and 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia (December 6, Dana Point, California USA).

  4. Opportunities for TC/CS Growth • Held a TCMC general information session at ISM’11 that was open to general audience and provided a forum for members and non-members to exchange ideas on how to build a stronger community. • Distributed TCMC recruitment flyers at major multimedia conferences such as IEEE ISM’11, ACM MM’11, and ICME’11. • Proactively recruit new members through personal email invitations, especially to those from under-represented groups.

  5. Increase CS Member Participation • The TC has a monthly newsletter, subscribed and distributed by email and web portal, which • informs TC members and other subscribers about how to subscribe, and relevant events concerning the community, including various calls for conferences and journals and call for participation of TCMC general meetings. • A TCMC general information session was held in 2011 in conjunction with 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia (December 7, Dana Point, California USA).

  6. Increase CS Member Participation (cont.) • Actively promoting its members for various prestigious awards, including IEEE Fellows, IEEE Technical Achievement Awards, and IEEE Senior members. • Proactively reaching out to TC members about opportunities to be involved in the technical program committee and/or the organizing committee of internationally renowned conferences, and journal guest editorship.

  7. Key Problems or Issues • Promote ISM to be IEEE’s flagship conference in the multimedia area • Impediments: a relatively short history of the conference • Need to strengthen the bond with industry. • Need to increase the communications and collaborations with other societies in related fields. • Plan: • Recruit industry liaisons; add ‘industrial track’ and ‘industrial exhibitions’ to ISM program; invite industrial keynote speakers • Co-sponsor multimedia conferences with other societies such as IEEE Signal Processing Society and ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia.
