Lessons on Stumbling, Forgiveness, Faith and Service Luke 17:1-10 This is a time of year for reflection, and Luke 17 covers 4 issues to consider as you approach the New Year
Stumbling Blocks are Inevitable Luke 17:1-2 Jesus has been teaching a large crowd giving attention to particular portions of it for different lessons Jesus turns His attention to His disciples with four lessons in humility to avoid being like the Pharisees
Stumbling Blocks are Inevitable Luke 17:1-2 We should be humble because sin is real and is unavoidable The statement is emphatic: “it is impossible that the stumbling blocks not come” - They are inevitable
Stumbling Blocks are Inevitable Luke 17:1-2 Stumbling block, skavndalon / skandalon, referred to the trigger on a trap or the entire trap
Stumbling Blocks are Inevitable Luke 17:1-2 Metaphorically it refers to a cause of ruin or stumbling either physically, morally or spiritually Two causes of ruin: The bait which is temptation, and the person who set the trap is an offense
Stumbling Blocks are InevitableLuke 17:1-2 A woe is an interjection expressing either grief or denunciation - a warning of coming disaster, horror, doom
Stumbling Blocks are InevitableLuke 17:1-2 Vs 2 is an illustration of the serious nature of the woe pronounced - a millstone used to drown you Millstones
Stumbling Blocks are InevitableLuke 17:1-2 The “little ones” are new believers - such as the tax-gathers and sinners that were repenting Jesus’ warning is appropriate for the Pharisees and the self-righteous, but it is also given to His disciples
Stumbling Blocks are InevitableLuke 17:1-2 Some “disciples” are false (John 6, 8), and false teachers even arise from among church leaders (Acts 20:29) There are many false teachers in our own time, both those with obvious heresy and those falsely pious Sin is inevitable even for believers - 1 John 1:8, 10
Forgiveness Must Be ExtendedLuke 17:3-4 Be on guard! Be aware and ready for what will come - stumbling blocks and those who trip over them Rebuke is expression of strong disapproval, finding fault, and admonishing - in this context, as a brother
Forgiveness Must Be ExtendedLuke 17:3-4 Rebuke is to be done with discernment and humility striving to win an erring brother (Mt. 7, 18; Gal. 6) Sin is primarily against God, and He provided a means of forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ
Forgiveness Must Be ExtendedLuke 17:3-4 Repentance is necessary to be right with God, and also to restore proper human relationships Christians are to forgive in the same way that God in Christ has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:32)
Forgiveness Must Be ExtendedLuke 17:3-4 Forgiveness strives to be at peace (Rom. 12:18) & does not hold into account a wrong suffered (1 Cor. 13:5) God forgives our multiple and repeated offenses as we repent, we are to forgive others in the same way
Faith Must IncreaseLuke 17:5-6 The disciples make a plea for additional faith so that they could carry out the Lord’s commands They recognize their need and plea for the Lord’s help in recognition that faith must come from God
Faith Must IncreaseLuke 17:5-6 Jesus’ correction is mild - they do not need additional faith, they only need a stronger faith - Rom. 4:19-21 The measure of faith is its trust in God Mustard seed was used as common illustration of something that is little because it is a very small seed
Faith Must IncreaseLuke 17:5-6 The sycamine (sukavminoV / sukaminos) tree is deeply rooted & used to illustrate what would be miraculous Jesus is illustrating that a small faith can do great things when the trust is in the correct object - the Lord
Faith Must IncreaseLuke 17:5-6 This is an encouragement that they already have enough faith to accomplish what God desires Faith is strengthened by increasing knowledge of God & His will and seeing His hand at work in our lives
Service is ExpectedLuke 17:7-10 This hypothetical story set in reality exposes the direct contrast between self-righteousness and humility If you kept all of God’s commandments and served Him perfectly, you will only have done what is required
Service is ExpectedLuke 17:7-10 This truth destroys all systems of self-righteous justification and human pride before God Many reject God at this point because they believe their own goodness can make demands from God
Service is ExpectedLuke 17:7-10 God will judge all sinners “according to their deeds” (Rev. 20:12-13) and be condemned by them God owes man nothing, yet based on Himself alone, He redeems and forgives man through Christ
Service is ExpectedLuke 17:7-10 A mere creature, an unworthy slave, is forgiven and invited to be adopted into God’s family through Jesus
Conclusion Recognize the danger of stumbling blocks and be on guard Forgive others as God has forgiven us in Christ Jesus
Conclusion Strengthen your faith by increasing in your knowledge of God and His will and discerning His work in you Humbly seek and serve Christ with all your heart, thankful for a good master who loves and cares for you
