  1. Cladogram of Animals

  2. Phylum Porifera Sponges – the simplest animal

  3. Porifera • most ancient group of animals (500 mya) • multicellular • heterotrophic • a few specialized cells • asymmetrical • invertebrate

  4. Porifera • means “pore bearers” since they have tiny openings all over body • filter feeder - eat tiny, floating organic particles and plankton • food and oxygen in, waste out • sessile - live permanently attached to a location in the water

  5. Phylum Cnidaria Jellyfish, sea fans, sea anemones, hydras, & corals Lions mane jellyfish - grows up to 8ft across
the tentacles can be over 100ft long

  6. Cnidaria • aquatic organisms • radial symmetry • invertebrate • central mouth • coral polyps build calcium carbonate structures coral reefs • stinging cells (nematocysts) are arranged on tentacles and used to capture food (small planktonic animals)

  7. Cnidaria • some individual, some colonial

  8. Use Ch 26 and write the correct phylum and symmetry.

  9. Use Ch 26 and match the correct phylum, picture and description.
