Liverpool ONE Biofuel Initiative April 2010
What to expect • Who we are • How the Biofuel Initiative was born • The facts and figures
Who are we • Liverpool ONE is a £1 billion shopping, residential and leisure development in Liverpool city centre. • Built around the existing streets of Liverpool;. The development includes over 100 shops, plus 24 cafés, restaurants and bars, 2 new hotels, a 14 screen Odeon cinema, 600 apartments and a 5 acre park. • We have over 120 team members including our own cleaning & waste team and customer support team.
Put forward by a team member during a monthly team meeting How was the initiative born? • Investigated the feasibility of the idea with environmental consultants Aardvark.(1) • Broadgate Estates funded the building of a bespoke room for the production and storage of biodiesel.(2) • Additional safety equipment over and above the initial requirements were installed.
We will be converting up to 400 litres a week giving us an over all biodiesel production of upwards of 1600 litres a month. Predicted volumes • This is a saving of: • CO2 saving of 54 tonnes a year • Over £10,000 a year in red diesel costs • In partnership with retailers Liverpool ONE can reduce the amount of waste oil leaving the premises by 12,480 litres per annum.
All our fleet will run on biodiesel We will see a large reduction in cost as we were paying approx 45p a litre for the Red diesel which did run our fleet, with biodiesel we will be paying approx 10p a litre. Reduction in CO2 output Beneficial outcomes
Hurdles Our only main hurdle was with building control who insisted on a purpose built room being designed and constructed.
