Challenge Africa 2012 Bradley Harrison
What am I doing? • Travelling to Kenya and Tanzania in Eastern Africa to: • Carry out community and construction work • Climb Mount Meru
St Lazarus School, Kibera Slums (Kenya) • 130 students in one class room • No other school will accept these children due to their families not being able to afford uniforms and text books
St Lazarus School, Kibera Slums (Kenya) • We aim to fund and fix the school • Launch another year’s lunch programme, ensuring that the children receive a healthy lunch every day • Hopefully (subject to costs) fund an entire year’s running costs, including: • Teacher salaries • Maintenance • Food • Books & materials
Makat Village, Lake Natron (Tanzania) • This village is at least a day’s off road drive from any other community/village • It’s surrounded by water which is unsafe to drink • Only one vehicle for the whole community • Local population suffer from incredible illnesses and diseases due to the unsafe water • Impossible to retain teachers and medical staff due to the isolation of the village
Makat Village, Lake Natron (Tanzania) • We will fund and construct a rainwater saving system for the community • Build a new building which will have 2 classrooms and a food storage room • Test the cattle for diseases to provide essential medical data • Take part in community workshops to help educate the locals how our help will benefit their lives • Install a solar panel, to attract doctors to stay within the community
Climb Mount Meru • Day 1: Climb to overnight cabin – 2,514 metres • Day 2: Climb to saddle hut – 3,570 metres • Day 3: Climb to peak at 1am before climbing back down the mountain.
Why am I taking part? • By taking part I can help raise an extra £3,500 for the charity as well as experience a once in a lifetime opportunity • I will be able to directly help the people in need and witness how our hard work helps the locals • I aim to be more involved with charity events in the future and showcase my experiences to get more people involved
How you’re helping • The money raised by you will help the children that I visit have at least one warm, healthy meal per day. • The communities will be safer to live in for the locals due to clean, safe water being collected. • No donations will pay for my mountain climb, I have paid for that myself, all money received directly pays for the materials we need to construct buildings.
