What is Yield Challenge? • Cooperation between Farmers, Agri-business, Researchers, and Schools to raise Illinois soybean yield levels • Real-world conditions that relate to farmer’s real production challenges • Opportunities for innovations, discovery, demonstrations, testing, and teaching
Yield Challenge is Important • To Farmers: • finding and implementing effective ways to improve Illinois soybean yields • To Schools and Students: • Hands-on experience in crop science planning, field execution, and learning experiences • Exposure for FFA and College ag programs • Cash awards to winning school ag departments • Spark interest in future crop science careers
Simple Protocol • Need 4 acres for plots – record practices and results • 2 acres normal production (check) • 2 acres yield enhancing practices (challenge) • Same variety on each plot • Compete against county average soybean yield for cash awards • State awards: 1st = $1,000; 2nd= $500
How can it work for you? • Flexibility in what is to be researched • Green light to test what interest your students, farmers, supporters, and curriculum – make it fit your students • No cost to schools • Agri-businesses may offer material support • How can the Yield Challenge fit your school situation? Illinois Soybean Association Crop Science Scholarships Ten $4,000 scholarships awarded Enrolled at one of the approved universities (ISU, SIU, WIU, U of I)
ISA Crop Science Scholarship • For students with 60+ credit hours (junior level and transfer students) • Major is a crop science discipline (breeding, biotechnology, plant pathology, weed management, crop management) • Interest in going to graduate school and into soybean research • Being administered by the Illinois Farm Bureau Foundation
