  3. The Factory System • Similar to textile factory system in England • Turned raw cotton into cotton cloth- all in one factory • Powered by waterfalls • Goal: Profit

  4. The Mill Girls • NE farm women, 16-25 years old

  5. Working/Living Conditions • 80 hours a week • Harmful air • Deafening/dangerous machinery • High wages- 35 to 50¢ a day • Clean • Boarded and chaperoned • Provided stores, schools, banks, library • Required church attendence

  6. “Turn-outs” • Demanded shorter work days • Protested pay cuts/rent increases • “The Lowell Offering”

  7. The End of the Lowell Experiment • 1840’s- Female NE workers were being replaced by Irish immigrants • After the Civil War, the Lowell Experiment was over
