  3. Taiga • Russian word for forest • largest biome • also called boreal or coniferous forest • fewer animal species than the deciduous forest • warm when summer • VERY cold when winter

  4. Taiga - Location • stretches over Eurasia and North America • located near the top of the world just below the Tundra biome

  5. Taiga Summers • warm • temperature range: 7 – 21 degrees • mostly warm, rainy, and humid • very short with 50 – 100 frost free days • total precipitation per year: 30 – 85 cm

  6. Taiga Winters • really cold • coldest season of the year • below freezing temp. • temperature ranges from –54 to –1 degrees

  8. Black Spruce • Picea mariana • other names: Bog Spruce and Swamp Spruce • can grow up to 25 meters tall • uses: build houses, antiscrobutic beverages, and rope

  9. White Poplar • Populus alba • light whitish/brownish in color • do not live long • grows fast • uses: for making boxes and crates

  10. Siberian Spruce • Pecea ovabata • can grow up to 30 meters • trunk is 1.5 meters in diameter • make up 5.7% of the total area of the Boreal forest • endangered
