Taiga • Russian word for forest • largest biome • also called boreal or coniferous forest • fewer animal species than the deciduous forest • warm when summer • VERY cold when winter
Taiga - Location • stretches over Eurasia and North America • located near the top of the world just below the Tundra biome
Taiga Summers • warm • temperature range: 7 – 21 degrees • mostly warm, rainy, and humid • very short with 50 – 100 frost free days • total precipitation per year: 30 – 85 cm
Taiga Winters • really cold • coldest season of the year • below freezing temp. • temperature ranges from –54 to –1 degrees

Siberian Spruce • Pecea ovabata • can grow up to 30 meters • trunk is 1.5 meters in diameter • make up 5.7% of the total area of the Boreal forest • endangered

Northern Lynx • Lynx canadensis • can grow up to 2 – 4 feet • weighs 11 – 45 lbs. • have excellent vision • killed because they are thought as pests
Red Fox • Vulpes vulpes • other name: Reynard • adapts well to diff. habitats • purposefully shot and killed by farmers • not endangered
