  1. Integrating Real Physical Activity and Virtual Game Gang Li, Xinfeng Li, Yuan Yuan, QiangZhai, Sen Zhang

  2. Background • Android • A software platform for mobile devices • Fastest growing mobile OS • 52.5% of sold smart phone in 2011 Q3 (25.3% in 2010 Q3) • Dominant OS • 43% of Smartphone market until 2011 Q3

  3. Motivation & Objective • Wii • Combination of physical exercises and videos games • App Objective • Interesting • Physical activity involvement

  4. App Overview • Sensor module • Data collection • Translate module • Data transformation • Game module • Game playing Sensor Translate Game

  5. Existing Apps/Games • Smartphone Apps • keep track of speed, miles and calorie • Android: CardioTrainer, My Trackers, RunKeeper • iOS: TailGuru, CityRUNNR, SpeedoMeter • Motion games • wireless controller + movement sensing + video game • Wii:  by Nintendo • Xbox 360 + Kinect: by Miscrosoft

  6. Comparison

  7. Motion Recognition & Measurement • Basic idea • One feature of smartphone is its various sensors such as accelerometer and GPS. • We can use these sensors to recognize and calculate kinds of motions.

  8. Motion Recognition & Measurement Existing approaches rely on several heuristic models such as artificial neural network. However, it consumes many calculation and storage resources and therefore is NOT compatible to smartphone. Besides, we also need to measure the motion.

  9. Motion Recognition & Measurement Jogging Push-up Sit-up

  10. Jogging Recognition & Measurement

  11. Jogging Recognition & Measurement • Improved method • Use inertia sensors to record the movement from start point to end point • Exploit GPS in duty-cycle to revise the error of inertia sensors

  12. Push-up Recognition & Measurement

  13. Sit-up Recognition & Measurement

  14. Translate Module • Build the connection • Use the exercise records to configure the game • Need transformation • Exercise records are not applicable for the direct configuration. • Physical attributes are much easier.

  15. Translate Module

  16. Game Module • Brief Discription • It is a soccer game. • It is coded in Java and is based on OpenGL and Irrlicht game engine.

  17. Game Feature • Funny 3D comic style • Enthralling stadium atmosphere • Keyboard and gamepad control • 2-player mode • Career and World Cup • 5 players each team

  18. Game Control

  19. Game Mode

  20. Friendly Game

  21. Career Mode

  22. Career Mode

  23. Worldcup Mode

  24. Player’s Attributes

  25. Screenshots

  26. Progress & Prospect • Progress • Sensing Module • Finished: Android sensing, basic exercise pattern • Todo: advanced exercise pattern • Gaming Module • Finished: code/project review, policy mechanism • Todo: game configuration interface • In the future… • Support more exercise types • Involve more hot (smartphone) games

  27. Q&A Thank You!
