Full-Day Pre-KindergartenGrant Q & A Dansville Primary School February 3 – June 26, 2014
Purpose The purpose of the Priority Full-Day Pre-Kindergarten and Extended Half-Day Pre-Kindergarten Grant Program for High Need Students is to increase the availability of high quality pre-kindergarten placements for the highest need children and schools within New York State’s public school districts.
Purpose (continued) This pre-kindergarten grant program will provide additional resources to significantly enhance program quality by requiring grantees to adopt program quality standards including valid and reliable measures of environmental quality, the quality of teacher-student interactions, and student outcomes.
New NY Education Reform Commission Studies show that children who participate in high quality early education programs are far more likely to read at grade level and graduate from high school, and that quality full-day pre-kindergarten programs in particular are credited with producing significant increases in student performance in math and reading for participating students by the second grade as well as decreasing the rates of grade retention.
New NY Education Reform Commission Research indicates that as much as half of the achievement gap is already established before students enter the 1st grade. Investing in high-quality pre-kindergarten has been demonstrated to have a positive long-term impact on children’s life outcomes, narrow the achievement gap, and provide benefits to children and taxpayers that outweigh their cost.

Questions Why are we doing this mid-year? In order to be eligible for the next two years of funding, we needed to apply and start the program this year and run it for a minimum of 90 days. Why is the full-day program running until 2:10 instead of earlier? (1)The latest our buses could transport Pre-K on their own buses would be 1:10 in order to return to provide transportation to K-6 students at 2:10 dismissal. (2) To provide lunch, rest time, and program additions. Will my child get the same teacher? Every effort will be made to maintain consistency during this transition, but there are limitations to the number of students that can be in each full-day classroom (18)
