Meet the Florida Manatee • Florida manatees are big gray animals that live in the water. Because they live in the water they are called aquatic animals. • Manatees are mammals, this means they breath air, they don’t have gills like other fish. • Even though manatees might look like a walrus or seal, they are not related to either of these animals. They are actually related to the elephant.
Whoa, those things are HUGE! At full size, most adult manatees are about 10 feet long and weigh between 800 and 1,200 pounds! The largest manatee on record was 13 feet long and weighed 3,500 pounds! QUIZ!
How do manatees get so big? • Manatees live a pretty sweet life, they spend most of their time eating, sleeping, or swimming. • Eating is a major part of a manatee’s day. They typically eat between 100 and 150 pounds of vegetable each day! Quiz!
