Why do domestic violence survivors & children end up at homeless shelters? • Forced to leave a dangerous situation • Lack of immediate resources • Unaware of specific resources available • DV shelter unable to assist • DV shelter unwilling to assist • Lack of support from friends & Family
What is different for DV survivors? • Safety concerns • CPS: “Damned if she does; damned if you doesn’t” • Barriers to marital assets • Abuser’s Sabotage • PTSS/PTSD
Response to DV Victims/Survivors • Ask the question • Assess DV resources available • Plan for their safety • Keep her informed • Technology • Barriers • Safety Planning (now & future)
Why does she go back? • Lack of resources • Lack of access to resources • Fear of losing her kids • Fear for her or her child/children’s safety • Abuser tactics • Misinformation • She is hopeful
