Going digital The NIMR experience
Background • Library established 1920 • Sets of scientific journals back to 19th c • National role • Diminished as other libraries developed • Journals cut back in 1970s/1980s • Current role is to support current science • Collection is rich in history of 20th biomedical science
Our users • 700 staff (500 scientific) • Academic postdoc researchers • some postgrad students • Substantial IT and network infrastructure • PC, Mac, Unix • Bio datasets • External proxy; VPN • Other MRC libraries • decreasing
My first e (databases) • 1966 Medlars • 1980s Medline etc on Datastar • 1990s Medline CDROM; BIDS-ISI; SciFinder • 2000 Relegated all print A&I. Disposed of some • 2010 Disposing most print A&I
My first e (journals) • 1995 J Biol Chem • 2001 Elsevier ScienceDirect • 2005 All journals e. Started transition to e-only subscriptions • 2010 Disposing some print journals; relegating more
Service philosophy • Not attached to format, only to content • Embraced electronic content for service reasons • Scientists love its flexibility and power • Abandoned print for pragmatic reasons • It is not used • Save space. Re-use space • Save staff time • Save money
What do users want? • Abstracts and Indexes • Very quickly switched to e-only • Journals • Quickly adopted ejournals • Slower to abandon print • Books • Still like print • May change quickly
Cautious and gradualist • Wait until overwhelming majority of users are there • Reliability of e-access is available • Move to store and monitor • Dispose
Steps • New subscriptions – e-only • Existing subscriptions – e-only • Backruns – (partially) e-only
Plan (1) • “Free” archives • Check PubMedCentral titles and holdings • Check Highwire Press free issues • Check purchased archives (JISC) • Check low cost licensed archives (JISC) • Check any other free archives • Be careful re. years/volumes and precise entitlements
Plan (2) • Will it ever be used again in print? • Index Medicus • Chemical Abstracts • Beilstein
Delays • Wanted Director’s approval for major shift away from print • No Director for three years
Space plans • Space for labs • Extra seating • Extra desk space • Extra display space
Where we are now • Have created space in store • Transferring journals to store • Starting to weed books
What we learned • Should have just done it three years ago • Worth bidding for funds for e-archives • Leave permanent archiving to other libraries
Future steps • Create a better user space in Library • Continue to monitor ebook developments
