INGAS Subproject SPB2 12 Month Meeting Naples, Subproject B2, Status AVL (month 7-12) Marko Certic, AVL List GmbH
INGAS Subproject SPB2 • Technical approach / Innovations – Engine Concept • New engine concept with central injector position will enable a good charge stratification capability and sufficient space for the mounting of the Piezo injectors Spark Plug Central Injector New cylinder head design for Multi cylinder engines (Daimler)
INGAS Subproject SPB2 • WPB2.4 Engine Testing/EAT System Management: • Main objectives of WPB2.4 are: • To do baseline tests as input for the catalyst development • To perform engine tests with new catalyst formulations • To perform engine tests with EAT system • To develop operation / calibration strategies for EAT system • To evaluate the emission potential of EAT system • Status Summary of WPB2.4: • Baseline testing (task B2.4.1) in progress • SPA2 deliverable DA2.11 gives an overview regarding combustion strategies and emission composition • EAT/Catalyst Evaluation (task B2.4.2) will start begin of 2010
INGAS Subproject SPB2 • Task B2.4.1 Engine/EAT Set-up/Baseline Investigations: • Engine setup is finished • Complex testbed setup with: • single cylinder Lambda • Single cylinder exhaust gas temperature • Exhaust gas emissions before and after catalyst with separation of Methane and THC (total HC emission) • Temperature before brick and in catalyst brick • Temperature before and after Turbine • Smoke • Possibility of a Fast FID measurement

INGAS Subproject SPB2 • Baseline Investigations: • First tests are done and documented in SPA2 deliverable DA2.11 • Further tests are planned with measurement of H2 content before catalyst • Test program defined together with Daimler
INGAS Subproject SPB2 • Results from baseline investigations (documented also in SPA2 deliverable DA2.11) • SOI Sweep -> influence of in cylinder homogenisation • Comparison of different operation strategies • In-cylinder in-homogeneity • Cylinder to cylinder Lambda deviation • Conversion efficiency series catalyst

INGAS Subproject SPB2 Comparison of different operation strategies
INGAS Subproject SPB2 Comparison of different operation strategies Maximum CO content (partload 2000rpm / 2bar bmep) with sufficient combustion stability Higher CO content possible with unbalanced cylinder lambda – Engine running smoothness suffers from different cylinder imep
INGAS Subproject SPB2 Comparison of different operation strategies CO content 1% (partload 2000rpm / 2bar bmep) for both strategies -> same exothermic reaction in catalyst At the same (increased) CO content the strategy of unbalanced cylinders shows better combustion stability and better over all running smoothness
INGAS Subproject SPB2 Emission before and after cat – conversion efficiency
INGAS Subproject SPB2 • Planned measurements with H2 analysis For every load point adjust lambda in range 1.1 – 0.9 in 0.02 steps and measuring H2, CO, CH4, NOX, NO, O2, lambda raw emissions before catalyst. That means 10 measurements for each engine load point, if possible with cold coolant. Hold engine load until concentrations become nearly state or ~3min.
INGAS Subproject SPB2 • Next Steps AVL (month13-18) • Baseline investigations with analysis of H2 raw emissions -> • Further tests for advanced catalyst heating strategy – This tasks is performed in SPA2 WPA2.4. A frequent data exchange to Daimler is planned. • Depending on availability of components (catalysts with new formulations and EAT System) baseline investigations and operation strategies can be tested on the test bed
INGAS Subproject SPB2 • Problems / Changes compared to plan • Due to HW problems with the engine and components (cam phaser, injector) baseline investigations are delayed but should be done within the next weeks • A first calibrated full engine map will not be available within 2009. HW problems are not 100% solved yet. Cam phaser problems lead to the risk of engine damage at high engine speed.
