Who is Joseph Schleifstein? • Joseph is the youngest Holocaust survivor. At the age of only four, he some how managed to make it through the horrors of a KZ camp in Buchenwald. When he was two, his parents weremoved to a forced labor camp in Germany, and Joseph was then placed into hiding. Later on, his mother was placed in a camp at Bergen-Belsen, and him and his father went to Buchenwald. After a year and a half, Joseph and his Father were eventually liberated and then taken to Switzerland for much needed medical treatment. After several months, they were finally reunited with his mother, Esther. http://theholocaustmuseum.info/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=new1_flypage.tpl&product_id=574&category_id=7&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=236

The smallest boy in the middle is Joseph, at the age of four he was definitely one of the mightiest out of the group of boys.
Legendary CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow went to Buchenwald (the camp Joseph was at) after liberation to do a report on the living conditions, how it looked, etc. Here’s what he said… “There surged around me an evil-smelling stink, men and boys reached out to touch me. They were in rags and the remnants of uniforms. Death already had marked many of them, but they were smiling with their eyes. I looked out over the mass of men to the green fields beyond, where well-fed Germans were ploughing ... In another part of the camp they showed me the children, hundreds of them. Some were only 6 years old. One rolled up his sleeves, showed me his number. It was tattooed on his arm. They will carry them till they die. I could see their ribs through their thin shirts ...” http://www.auschwitz.dk/schleifstein.htm
This is one of the most famous pictures of Joseph in his youth.
