Danny Maas EmTech AISI Consultant Daniel.Maas@ecsd.net Using Google Earth in the Inclusive UDL Classroom:
Underlying realities: • Alberta’s classroom populations are diverse • The printed page is dominant in classrooms • Inflexible print and narrowly defined goals present huge barriers to many students • When the barriers are removed, ALL students can learn and be striving towards the same high standards.
Rationale for Using Google Earth Universal Design for Learning • Presenting information and content in different ways (the "what" of learning) • Differentiating the ways that students can express what they know (the "how" of learning) • Stimulating interest and motivation for learning (the "why" of learning) • http://www.cast.org/research/faq/index.html#q1
Rationale for Using Google Earth • Skill & Attitude Development • Visual literacy • Global awareness • Geographic thinking • Inquiry • http://www.cast.org/research/faq/index.html#q1
1. Fly Home • Enter your address including city and province • Click the search button • Use the mouse scroll wheel or navigation arrows to move around
Turning on Information Layers • In the lower left, click in the boxes of the information layers you’d like to see • Recommended: • 3D Buildings • Street View • Roads • Check out GlobalAwareness & More
Street View • Zoom in on a location with a camera icon and double-click it • Use your mouse to drag around your 360 degree view • Click the ‘Exit Photo’ button in the upper right to return to the standard view
3D Buildings • In Edmonton, move your location to the Alberta Legislature Building (or type “9718 107 street Edmonton AB”) • Zoom in closer using your mouse scroll wheel • Hold ‘Shift’+scroll wheel to move your view from overhead to a more horizontal view • Hold ‘Ctrl’+scroll to rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise
Adding Placemarks • Along the top toolbar, the Placemarks button looks like a yellow pushpin • When Clicked, an untitled placemark will be placed onto the screen. • Drag the placemark to the location you want. • In the “New Placemark” window, add a name. • Optionally, add a description or change the style & color. • Clicking on the yellow pin icon can change the image represented
Final Discussion • How can Google Earth provide students with: • Multiple means of representation? • Multiple means of expression? • Multiple means of engagement? UDL
Next Sessions • Specific examples of Google Earth activities across subject areas • More skill work • Time to explore sites which have Google Earth activities or files
