  2. Hi! I’m Freddy! I hear you want to learn more about open number lines! My friends and I would love to help! So, let’s HOP TO IT!

  3. What is an open number line? Number line: Open Number line: An open number line is like a regular number line, but it doesn’t have any number labels. You will see what I mean in just a minute! But first, let’s review some important math vocabulary… It is a strategy you can use to keep track of adding numbers in ‘chunks’ that make sense to you (by place value, making a ten, or skip counting). Addition Vocabulary: Addend: a number you are adding to another number Sum: the total, or the answer Addends Sum 2 + 3 = 5

  4. 22 + 12 = Use what you know about place value to add in easy, “friendly” chunks! 10 + 2 +10 Hopper makes a jump for each chunk of the second addend! Label your jumps to help you keep track! Can you think of another way Hopper could have made his jumps? +1 +1 34 32 33 34 22 When you total your jumps, the sum should equal your second addend. 10 + 1 + 1 = 12 Start your number line with your first addend.

  5. 34 + 16 = Look! We can make a 10! 34 Remember, place value chunks! + 6 10 + 6 = 40 +10 +6 Use your Lily Pad Line Sheet to show a partner another way Roody could have made his jumps! Just a 10 to go! Go Roody! 50 40 50 34 So, starting at 34 Roody will jump 6 to make 40. Let’s try another one!

  6. 65 + 15 = Since 15 has a 5 in the ones place, I know I can skip count by 5’s! 5 + 5 + 5 Dolly did a great job! Can you think of another way she could have made the jumps? +5 +5 +5 Go Dolly! 80 65 70 75 80 Now, starting from 65 Dolly will count by 5’s until the sum of her jumps is 15! Remember to start your number line with your first addend.

  7. My friends and I have shown you how to use an open number line, so now it’s your turn to try it on your own! 48 + 22 = 70 This is just one of they ways you could have done your jumps.
