Who is Jimmie Rodgers? • James Charles • Born on September 18, 1897 in Meridian, Mississippi • Contracted for Tuberculosis & died May 26, 1933 in New York City • Country Music Singer • Famous for his Rhythmic Yodeling • Known as: • “The Singing Brakeman” • “The Blue Yodeler” • “The Father of Country Music”

  4. Early Achievements • The first preeminent voice in country music • Credited as the first million-selling single songs • Filmed the movie “The Singing Brakeman” • His Top Music Hits: • “Blue Yodel” known as “T for Texas” • “Blue Yodel № 9” • “In the Jailhouse Now” • “Frankie and Johnnie”

  5. Late Achievements • In 1933, finished recording few songs, including his top hit “Mississippi Delta Blues” • “Years Ago”: • Was recorded by himself just as a man & his guitar • Was recorded 36 hours before he died • In 1961, inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame

History of Country Music • Was originated in the rural regions of the Southern United States in the 1920’s • The first two country songs: "Arkansas Traveler" and "Turkey in the Straw“ by Henry Gilliland & Eck Robertson • Jimmy Rodgers and the Carter Family are considered the most important early country musicians • Cowboy & Western music played concurrently on radio stations during the 1930’s-1940’s
