Lone workers are those who work by themselves without close or direct supervision. • Employees who work away from their business' base. • People working outside normal hours • Mobile workers who may be on their own for long periods of their working day. • Only one person who works on a premises e.g.. Kiosks, shops, small workshops • People who work alone and work in a potentially hazardous environment e.g. construction workers Source: HSE – Working Alone in Safety – Controlling the Risk of Solitary Work

  4. CaseExample Gamekeeper found dead following accident on quad bike The trustees of a Borders country estate have been fined after admitting a health and safety breach in connection with a gamekeeper's death. Douglas Armstrong, 53, died after his quad bike crashed on the Philiphaugh Estate near Selkirk. It took 52 hours before he was reported missing and subsequently found dead. Trustees admitted failing to provide a means of communication or carrying out a risk assessment for a lone worker to report in at the end of a shift. This could have been avoided More examples... 8. the Peoplesafe solution Employers must act on their duty to care. The risk assessment process must be implemented. Lone workers require clear and auditable instructions and policies regarding their lone working practices Once a consistent and effective policy has been agreed and prepared for implementation it is inevitable that those who work alone will require skills and training. Once training and safety devices are implemented against a agreed policy these mechanisms will need to be maintained and supported across a diverse organisation. 10. Moral Argument • Effects of violence, aggression or a compromise to safety can result in decreased morale • If staff are not protected there is the potential for physical and mental health problems, or even death in extreme cases • A commitment should be made by every organisation to manage the risks to personal safety and create a safe working environment Source: HSE – Working Alone in Safety – Controlling the Risk of Solitary Work
