2. Famous People Robert Fulton: • Created the first steamboat which was useful to transport goods. • Steamboats were able to transport heavy loads • In the 1800’s the steamboat was able to take goods across the Atlantic Ocean.

3. Famous People Jon Loudon McAdam: • Jon Loudon McAdam created macadam and this product we still use today. • This helped complete the turnpikes that were put into plan • With Macadam people could travel without the bad conditions of the roads.

4. Famous People Thomas Telford: • Thomas Telford created a system of laying large flat stones in the ground • This is known as cobblestone Richard Trevithick: • Created the first steam locomotive • This allowed for safer travel and all these inventors created a better way to transport goods

5. New Methods of Transportation Western Life • People started to live more in the west so there had to be a way to get them goods • Heavy products mad it hard to move so many people turned to inventors for guidance

6. New Methods of Transportation Steamboats • These steamboats were able to move against the current of the water • Steamboats traded through eh Mississippi and the Hudson river • The steamboats brought new jobs to Mississippi and even went more into the west where people were now settling

New Methods of Transportation Macadam’s Roads: • Jon Macadam created macadam to improve to use of roads • His roads were slightly angled from both sides and large stone was placed under the gravel and smaller stone. Telfords’ Roads: • Thomas Telford created his roads so the roads were angled • There was small broken stone under the top layer of mud • This was better for animals and faster travel

8. Improvements on existing methods • During the Industrial Revolution, transportation has improved immensely. People around that time period would travel by using horse-drawn wagons or by foot but the roads were in no condition to use. In 1751, turnpikes were created for the horse-drawn wagons with the new foundations in the roads with large flat stones made by Thomas Telford.

9. Improvements on existing methods • Transportation via water was the cheapest way to move heavy cargo such as coal and iron. As a result of large cargo, canals were widened and deepened to allow more boats to pass.

10. Prediction for impact on Great Britain • As the factories grow in Great Britain then the more people need to move natural resources. And when they make the finished products they would need to get it to the markets quickly. So canals and roads help this because the Telford roads made it faster and easier for the animals to walk on. The canals were faster and cheaper then roads. But, the steamboat and railroads were more dominant then the canals and roads. Trains traveled at 29 miles per hour which was fast back then. And steamboats were very efficient because they ran on steam and reduced the travel time by half of a sail boat’s time. So this would help the economy of Great Britain.

11. Predictions on how transportation will spread • As trading becomes bigger and building too. Then people will need things to help them transport the resources needed for the task. Ships and animals, such as horses, can help them accomplish moving large items or shipping items over sea for trading. • So this means that the demand for transportation will skyrocket due to the fact that the industrial revolution is spreading to other countries and they need things to help them move resources around and that is what will help transportation spread.

12. Predictions on how transportation will impact other countries • As countries continue to grow the more transportation will be needed. Same goes for trade, as trade grows then the demand of transportation will grow. • The use of transportation will grow because of the demand. More people will be able to trade overseas because of railroads and steam boats.

13. Transportation is the most important advancement of the Industrial Revolution • Transportation was the most important advancement of the Industrial Revolution because without waterways, roads, and railroads, you wouldn’t be able to transport heavy products such as coal and iron. • Without the improvements of the roads from John Loudon McAdams and Thomas Telford, we would have a poor conditions especially considering that the most popular of transportation in on foot or by horse-drawn wagons.
