America is neutral • Wilson determined to keep America out of the war in Europe. • “We must be impartial in thought as well as in action”- President Woodrow Wilson • This was difficult and most Americans ended up taking a side. • German & Irish Americans for Germany// Central Powers. • Most Americans for Britain// Allied Cause.
Swaying Americans? • British officials worked hard to gain American support. • Main method used = Propaganda.
What is it? • Aform of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of the audience toward some cause or position.
Propaganda statements may be partly false and partly true. • Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the chosen result in audience attitudes
How did it affect America? • Both sides (Central & Allies) used propaganda. • German Propaganda = Anti-Russian • Did not appeal to Americans • British propaganda = well controlled and skillfully created and delivered.
Gallery Walk- Directions! • Each row = a group • Each group will start at an assigned image and answer the questions from the next slide. • Each group must work together to answer the questions but everyone must write the answers in your notes! • You will have 3-4 minutes at each image. • At the end of 3-4 minutes your group will move to the next image numerically.
