  2. Early School Leavers: Statistics Completion Rates:2018

  3. Early School Leavers: StatisticsDropout Rates:

  4. Causes of School Leavers • A lack of motivation at home and encouragement at home, some parents may not have finished second level education or third level education, and so this attitude can be passed down onto their children. • In order to tackle this issue, we suggest that we invite the parents or guardians in to be more informed on what is occurring in school as the parent's education may have been different, negative or non-existent.

  5. Causes of School Leavers • Distractions are a huge factor in school leavers for example: adolescents may use both alcohol and drugs as a way to distract themselves and as a result can cause them to lose interest in everything other than this. Unplanned pregnancy and similar issues may also play a role in young teenage girls leaving school early. • In order to tackle this we suggest that again invite parents but also the external community to become aware of such happenings and help them to be able to talk to young people about these issues. The better access to contraceptives and making it easier for pregnant teenagers to continue their studies at home

  6. Causes of School Leavers • Financial struggles can determine whether a family can afford to pay to send a child to school with the extensive prices of the necessities such as books, uniform, stationery etc... • In order to tackle this issue we suggest: raising awareness to families of organisations that offer to help with financial struggles which is not widely known.

  7. Causes of School Leavers • The perception of LCA (Leaving Certificate Applied) as a “doss” or a waste of time could contribute to people leaving school earlier as they may see that there is no point in doing it. • In order to improve the perception and generalised opinion we suggest talking to pass pupils who have successfully completed the programme and explain how the LCA affected their life to gain more insight into the programme.

  8. Helping School Leavers • SOLAS, formerly FÁS, is a government agency that deals with apprenticeships. SOLAS offers the education of theory in an apprenticeship while a company may offer to take oneself on in order to gain both experience and a hands on education

  9. Helping School Leavers • LCA (Leaving Certificate Applied) is a distinct, self-contained Leaving Certificate programme. It is designed for those students who do not wish to proceed directly to third level education or for those whose needs, aspirations and aptitudes are not  catered for by the other two Leaving Certificate programmes. Although options are limited the use of 80% attendance marks motivates students who didn’t necessarily attend school a lot to come in, it also does not test the memory too much as it is continuous assessment.

  10. Helping School Leavers • Engaging in your local community and discussing things can help to clear many misconceptions about leaving school, the process involved and negative stereotypes associated. Many more people need to be aware of the programmes, college choices and qualifications needed to get different jobs.

  11. conclusion In the long term, the Irish Education System needs to evolve past it's industrial revolution establishment and begin to cater to the needs of everyone in the education system thus reducing the number of early school leavers overall.
