What are some differences between high school and middle school? • The Schedule for Your Day • Everything COUNTS for CREDIT • You must have at least 24 credits in order to graduate • 95% attendance required for A+ and College Readiness Diploma • Opportunities to do NEW things and try new classes. This is your last “Free” education!

  4. Credits & Units • These 2 terms mean the same thing. • Full-year Class = 1 credit • Semester Class = ½ credit • Remember, EVERYTHING COUNTS so come to school and pass all your classes!

  5. It is just like MONEY in a bank! • 50 cents = ½ credit • $1.00 = 1 credit • How many dollars can you earn in one year if you come to school and pass your classes? • How many dollars do you need to earn to graduate?

  8. North Kansas City Schools Diploma24 Credits (pg. 9) • Graduates: • meet the state requirements for graduation from high school • are ready to enter community colleges, vocational-technical schools and many state colleges.

  9. College Readiness Diploma25 Credits (pg. 10 & 11) • Graduates are recognized for: • meeting entrance requirements for most Missouri universities • start comparing four-year colleges and universities now for admission requirements.

  10. Gold Medallion Honors Diploma26 Credits (pg. 11-12) • Graduates receive honors and are recognized for: • completing a rigorous program • meeting all entrance requirements for the University of Missouri system as well as most universities nationwide. Graduate with Honors!

  11. International Baccalaureate Diploma26 Credits (pg. 13-14) • Graduates receive honors and are recognized for: • completing rigorous international curricula • meeting the entrance requirements of the world’s best universities. Graduate with Honors!

  12. To work on the IB diploma, students must enroll at North Kansas City High School regardless of current middle school. • Students should be academically able, highly motivated and willing to learn time-management and study skills. Graduate with Honors!

  15. A+ Benefits Available with ALL diplomas and at each high school. • Tuition paid to any of Missouri’s 2-year public community colleges or vocational-technical schools • Scholarship options to some 4-year universities Sign up at your high school when you pick up your schedule.

What can I do as a 9th grader to ensure excellent A+ standing? • Come to school at least 95% of the time • Be a good citizen • Earn a minimum 2.5 (C+) grade point average • Advanced or Proficient on Algebra I EOC • Volunteer to tutor or mentor other students See the A+ Coordinator next fall if you have questions.

  20. Selecting Courses:Course Descriptions These symbols will be found by some classes and they indicate: eCampus, Dual Credit, Gold Medallion or Monarch Academy

  21. Honors Courses • Honors and Pre-IB • All students may take Honors Courses! • Challenge to your strengths & interests. • If choosing Gold Medallion, take 1, 2, or 3 core honors courses each year. • If choosing IB, all core courses are Honors courses.

  22. Honors Classes? • How Do I Decide? (p. 16) • Do I have A’s or B’s in the class(es) I’m considering taking? • Do I have 95% or higher average attendance? • Do I score well on tests? • Am I organized and turn in completed homework? • Can I plan and prioritize my time? • Does this class interest me?

  23. Grade 9 Core Courses • English Language Arts I or Honors ELA • World History or Honors World History • Physics or Honors Physics • Math Course: Algebra I unless you have completed it in middle school

  25. Physical Education and Health All students must take 1 credit of PE and .5 of Health in order to graduate. All students are encouraged to complete their PE and Health requirements by the end of their 10th grade year.

  26. Fine Arts (pg. 58-63) One credit required for all diplomas. Does not have to be in Grade 9.

  27. Practical Arts (pg. 64-77) One credit required for all diplomas. Does not have to be in Grade 9.

  28. Modern Language (pg. 55-57) • NKCS Diploma -- Not required, counts as elective credit. • College Readiness Diploma -- Not required, but two units strongly recommended. • Gold Medallion Honors Diploma--Two units of same language required. • IB Diploma--Required every year

  36. FreshmanCourseSelectionWorksheet Alternate Classes Very important to pick alternates you would enjoy taking, as class availability will determine an alternate in the case of a conflict. You will not be able to switch classes in the Fall!

  37. Alternate Classes • Must be filled out. • Include semester and full-year courses. • Alternates will be selected for you if not completed on this part of the form. • Select carefully!! If first choice course request is replaced with alternate, there might not be an option to change your schedule.
