the arts • Maori art is one of the most sophisticated and diverse in South Pacific. Before Europeans arrived, stories and legends of this people were transmitted orally, but also through a range of artistic techniques that take several forms: carving wood, bone, jade (Pounamu) and shellfish, baskets.
MAORI art and craft • They are famous for their Artistic jewellery, war weapons, bone carving designs, ... • Using New Zealand bone, pearl shell, they carve ceremonial jewelry in wonderful tribal designs.
Maori Carving A carving that has been worn by family or tribal members over many generations contains the spirit of all of those people. The Maori have a great respect for nature and have many legends about the creation of the earth and all its inhabitants.
MAORI TATTOO : “MOKO” Maori tattoo was called moko. The pigment used was soot. Men frequently had large spirals tattooed on their bottoms and on their thighs. Women were usually tattooed only on the lips and the chin, though sometimes a small mark was made on the forehead.
Ancestor’s gift The figures in Maori carving represent ancestors of the tribe.
Modern Maori New Zealand Maori of today also carve modern shaped carvings like whale, shark, and turtle.
